What makes Cocos so special ?
Isla del Coco is a unique and exceptional island territory. The island was the only emergent land mass from a volcanic phenomenon in the submarine mountain range of the Coco Plate. It has long been an enigma for treasure hunters - the legend of the missing gold of Lima inspecific - which is said to be buried on the island. It was a resting point for both pirates and explorers in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in later days, a paradise for scientists and researchers. In 1997 it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

This small island is home to over 100 species of birds - three of these endemic to Isla del Coco; two endemic species of crustaceans; three endemic species of freshwater fish and over 400 species of insects. The island´s waters also boasts 32 species of coral, not to mention humpback and pilot whales, bottle nose dolphins, three species of sea turtle and migrating sealions.

All of this diversity in just 23.85km2 of land, with 1997km2 of marine territory (a radius of 12 nautical miles).
